What is Sound Therapy?
Some have called sound healing ‘new age wellness,’ but sound healing is hardly a new form of healing. The healing power of sound dates back to ancient Greece when healing music was used to help alleviate mental disorders. Sound healing can be traced back 40,000 years to the times when indigenous Australians used ancient didgeridoos for healing. Another historical example of sound healing goes back to the sound chambers created by the ancient Egyptians in the pyramids. In biblical times, instruments were used to vanquish evil spirits from human souls. Native American culture uses song and dance to heal the sick. Sound healing is nothing new.
Sound healing can help improve our physical and mental health by promoting relaxation, reducing stress and anxiety, releasing emotions, improving mood, and enhancing mindfulness.
Experiencing a Sound Healing session can be a unique and powerful experience if you approach it with an open mind, and are receptive to whatever sensations or emotions arise.
The Science of Sound Healing
Simply, this involves using sound vibrations to relax your mind and body. Sound can shift frequencies from low energy of guilt and fear to higher vibrations of love and joy. It involves the use of instruments, such as crystal bowls, Tibetan bowls, Zaphir Chimes, Tuning Forks or other instruments to release energetic blockages to induce a state of ease and harmony in the body.
The article, Psychoacoustics: The Fascinating Science Behind Sound Healing, provides some of the science behind sound healing. Tuning forks, for example, have healing powers. Calibrated tuning forks can be held to specific parts of the body to send vibrations that release tension and open blocked energy channels. This form of sound healing is good for emotional balance and pain relief. The perfect 5th, achieved with tuning forks, is one of the most healing and balancing sounds for the human body.
Sound wellness is a holistic modality that uses techniques based on sound and music to bring your mind, body, emotions, and spirit back into harmony.
